About / Imprint

The information system PANGAEA is operated as an Open Access library aimed at archiving, publishing and distributing georeferenced data from earth system research. The system guarantees long-term availability of its content through a commitment of the operating institutions.

Most of the data are freely available and can be used under the terms of the license mentioned on the data set description. A few password protected data sets are under moratorium from ongoing projects. The description of each data set is always visible and includes the principle investigator (PI) who may be asked for access.

Each dataset can be identified, shared, published and cited by using a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). Data are archived as supplements to publications or as citable data collections. Citations are available through the portal of the German National Library of Science and Technology (GetInfo).

Archiving follows the Recommendations of the Commission on Professional Self Regulation in Science (pdf, 200 kB) for safeguarding good scientific practice.

The system is operated in the sense of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities which is a follow up to the Budapest Open Access Initiative.

The policy of data management and archiving follows the Principles and Responsibilities of ICSU World Data Centers and the OECD Principles and Guidelines for Access to Research Data from Public Funding.

Authors submitting data to the Pangaea data library for archiving aggree that all data are provided under a creative commons license.

PANGAEA is open to any project or individual scientist to archive and publish data. Start a data submission here.

The World Data Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (WDC-MARE) uses PANGAEA as its data archive and distribution system. WDC-MARE publishes project specific data compilations in the WDC-MARE Reports in irregular intervals.

PANGAEA is a designated archive for the journal Earth System Science Data (ESSD)

panFMP The search engine is powered by the open-source software panFMP (PANGAEA Framework for Metadata Portals) which is also used to establish the IODP data portal SEDIS.
